I Investigate Canada's Drug Epidemic. Free Drugs & Death

2026-03-07 — PatrickLancasterNewsToday — original

In this report I travel to East Hastings Street in Vancouver, Canada, widely known as the epicenter of the countryโ€™s drug crisis. Walking the streets both at night and during the day, I document what I see with my own eyes โ€” open drug use, drug deals, homelessness, and the complex social reality that exists here.
In recent years, Canada experimented with drug decriminalization policies and safe-supply programs, including supervised consumption sites and government-supported harm reduction initiatives. Supporters argue these programs save lives and reduce overdoses, while critics claim they have worsened addiction and made the crisis more visible in public spaces.

During this on-the-ground investigation I witness:

โ€ข Open drug use on the streets
โ€ข Drug deals taking place in public
โ€ข Police presence but little enforcement
โ€ข Volunteer groups distributing food and aid
โ€ข Church missions helping the homeless
โ€ข Conversations with people living and working in the area

I also speak with volunteers from Love One Another Canada Mission, who come to East Hastings every week to provide meals and support to people struggling with addiction and homelessness.

The situation raises difficult questions:

Has decriminalization helped reduce harm?
Or has it made the crisis worse?

This report shows the reality on the ground and lets viewers decide for themselves.
