In this report, I traveled to Calgary, Alberta, to find out what is really happening around the Alberta independence movement. Some call it democracy and the right of the people to decide their own future. Others see the idea of separation as dangerous, destructive, and even close to treason. I spoke with both supporters of independence and those strongly against it to show you the real opinions of ordinary people, not just the loud headlines in the media.
In this first episode of my investigation in Alberta, you will see street interviews, conversations with people collecting signatures for a referendum on Alberta independence, as well as the views of those who believe Alberta should remain part of Canada. People speak about Ottawa’s treatment of Alberta, money, oil, taxes, representation, the possibility of a referendum, the risks of separation, and whether this issue could be connected to Trump’s comments about a “51st state.”
