Hungary After Orban: Systemic Change or More of the Same?

2026-04-13 — MichaelRossiPoliSci — original

After many weeks away due to various Spring Breaks, Easter holidays, and coordinating among the three of us, I am happy to announce the return of my three-way talks with Pyotr and James.

Our primary discussion today will be the electoral defeat of Viktor Orbán in Hungary to Péter Magyar. This comes as largely little surprise, since Orbán's Fidesz Party has run Hungary for sixteen years, and voter fatigue was a matter of time.

Still, we will examine whether this means any real systemic change for Hungary; a Central European country that has largely pattented the modern day model of illiberal electoral democracy, and whether Magyar's election will spell the end of such political patterns, or whether it will be a temporary blip, as it was in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

If time permits, we will also discuss the ongoing events in Iran, which have all happened outside of our regular talks.
